“Mkwaju” is something unexpected from Joe Hisaishi (at least for me, who usually associates him with music for animes). This music is different from Hisaishi’s more popular work, although his notion for composed meaningful dreamscapes is present as well. Personally I believe the over-use of the dominant Xylophone limits the listening experience – simply because it gets annoying sooner or later, also the sound of Xylophone – for a reason unknown to me – is a cliche often used in African-themed, but not African-originated music.
