Following the recent controversy about the Jerry Goldsmith release (PURSUIT) suspected of being sourced from a lossy master — and it turned to be the case —, I decided to double-check the deluxe edition of THE SCORPION KING.
I compared two versions of the same track — one in MP3 320kbps and the other labeled as FLAC 16bit/44.1kHz.
Both spectrograms show an identical hard cutoff at ~16kHz, with no extra high-frequency content in the FLAC file.
No useful data above 16kHz = textbook evidence of MP3 compression.
This so-called FLAC is clearly a transcode from a lossy source (very likely the same MP3), and not a true lossless file…
