This was the first directorial effort of Michael Crichton, and was based on his novel “Binary”, which he wrote under the pseudonym John Lange. He would make his theatrical directorial debut a year later in 1973 with Westworld, his screenplay for which he essentially reworked into Jurassic Park two decades later, changing the robots to dinosaurs.
