Styles change, people age, sounds grow. If Hans Zimmer continued to make “quiet” scores of his early days, then he would stagnate. Besides, each score a both “quiet” AND “loud” tracks, as well as many rhythms in between.
Stop complaining – you’re getting a free version!!
At your command, corporal! Left, right, left, right…By the way, ZIMMER has never made “quiet scores of his early days”. His film music was great and he was really one of the biggest. Just look at the career of John WILLIAMS, for example, and you will see that one can stay on top without stagnating, while accompanying his era. Hans ZIMMER has become a business leader, in front of his computer and it’s really a shame. Now, yes, let’s move on!
I absolutely agree with Laurent. Dune deserved an epic soundtrack, and what it got was… this. Another in a sadly too long line of soundscape underscores from Zimmer – and it has nothing to do with changing tastes, but more to do with a composer who has fallen into a comfortable groove and is so pre-eminent that we’re hearing lookalike scores by the hundreds. WW84 was passable, Dunkirk was dreary, Man of Steel was dire, BR 2049 had moments of beauty but wasn’t a patch on Vangelis (and one wonders what Johann Johannsson would have given us) and this is an instantly forgettable underscore. Underscore can be exceptional – think of Interstellar! – but with Dune Zimmer has given a bloated mess of a non-score.
Thank you, Soundtrackman. Your analysis, properly argued, is hardly questionable.

I agree with SOUNDTRACKMAN and LAURENT. My humble opinion,…i am 38yo,..i was tuba player in philharmonie and i love orchestral music. 20 years i am listening only movie soundtracks and from classic music Shostakovich, Mahler, R. Strauss,Stravinsky works. I love that strong, massive orchestral music. And my opinion about Hans Zimmer music is,….he is very commercial now 🙁 is sad. Because if somebody ask me,.what music i listening and i answer ”movie soundtracks”,.then almoust everybody say ,..ooh yes yes,.. Hans Zimmer. I love John Williams,Ala Silvestri,David Arnold,..Danny Elfman, James Horner, James Newton Howard, Goldsmith,..M. Kamen,..and all those best composers. But honestly,…all best scores were maded until,..hmmm,.lets say,..2010?? All best star wars, Independece day, Xmen saga,…LOTR,…all the best really huge, massive, earthquake sounded scores are no those news 🙁 Because now so many scores are full of electro sounds 🙁 so much is computer feeling there and is not good 🙁 many strange sounds, rhytms etc etc,… where ae those times,.when composers did great 2 CDs albums ,full of 100members orchestra and choir. Episode I , Independence Day , X men 2 , LOTR , Waterworld ,…and all those amazing pieces of art. Now u get new music of Hans Zimmer and u get mix of computer electro samples 🙁 🙁

Merci.

I think the username of Corporal Hicks is a reference to ALIENS, no that you seemed to realise this with your immature response.
Sorry, but John Williams didn’t stay at the top; everything since Episode I has been uninspired and repetitive. I get it, they all sound “Williamsesque” but nothing memorable. I remember being hyped about him doing the SOLO theme, and it’s merely OK, but whatever …
Dammit another robot is malfunctioning, don’t worry champ will fix you up good and you’ll be bathing in hot oil in no time… (Not to self: unit has a damged processor, shut down and strip down for parts)
Thanks admin. This score is not as good as the original score for the David Lynch movie, which was by Toto, and was very nearly the best thing about that movie, and is still a big favourite of mine.
This score will take some getting used to, but its loads better than some of Hans Zimmer’s scores. There are even some pretty decent Musique-Concrète pieces that are quite interesting. However there are some that are, shall we say, an acquired taste. But over all not too bad.
It definitely is complete. It is even in chronological order which is rather rare for Zimmer as well. The movie is a quiet one (until it isn’t, and when it isn’t it’s loud!), so the only things missing are reused atmospheric drone stuff. The most prominent songs are definitely there. And together with the Sketchbook (and the Art and Soul of Dune when it comes out) we will definitely have enough! Even more than enough!
I have seen the movie and the most prominent songs are in the soundtrack. It’s a Villeneuve movie, so it has a bit of a slow pacing (except Dune doesn’t feel like that) and it also is a very quiet movie in comparison to other Sci fi movies. So, no, I don’t think that there will be another disc released. Except from the Art and Soul of Dune album. There are only some little things missing, atmospheric stuff, that is reused from other songs that are on the album. And together with the Sketchbook this is definitely enough.
I’ve been reading the comments on this page, and they seem to differ wily between hate for Zimmer, and a love for his stuff. I’d say… Meh! he’s ok sometimes, good but not remarkable. Comparing him to John Williams is a non-starter, as John Williams has always been a genius, for his days as a Pianist for Henry Mancini on the Peter Gunn scores for the episodes of that series (…and especially its theme) right up to his latest and last work, on Star Wars IX (not a stellar final work, but then the film was terrible and he was probably influenced by that). Zimmer has made some really decent scores over the years, but not to Williams true level. His bad scores far outweigh his good though.
As I said before, this score is not too bad, but no-where near as good as the Toto one. Now what I’d love to hear is the score that they had planned for the Jodorowsky’s version of Dune. From what I hear, he had planned a score by a different progressive rock group for each of the houses in the corporate hierarchy that makes up the family of characters of Dune. With the likes of Pink Floyd, Magma, and Tangerine Dream set to produce the music. Now that’s a score I’d have loved to hear, particularly the Pink Floyd parts. It is possible that some stuff that the Floyd probably started writing for the film found its way into the album Wish You Were Here and even later works. Who really knows…
I would have hoped that some of the Jodorowsky ideas would inform this version of Dune, particularly where the art direction and music were concerned. Guess it isn’t going to happen. Pity.
P.S. Why does the text I write always differ from the published version? Bet its that damned spell check rubbish! Wish I could turn it off. Anyway below is my “Corrected text”.

Fate and luck permitting, I would be honored to create an animated version of Jodorowsky’s Dune, with classic Floyd tracks included (no Tangerine Dream, though). I can already imagine an Arrakian flyby scored with “Breathe In the Air”…

Hans Zimmer is doing a great job, you are wrong and salty, deal with it <3
I’m sorry, but giving an opinion (even negative and that displeases you) is not pretension, just freedom of expression. And I’m not saying I’m right. I keep saying this to everyone.

Wowww! Nice catch! Thanks!
Thank you very much !!
Good news: It has already fallen so far that it will now start to move back to a higher level… To be seen with the next “James Bond” film…
What do you mean?
Now that it has hit rock bottom, it can only rise…
Oh no the troll has spoken what are we to do lol… Grow up!
No one cares!

Honestly, this sounds like the first CD of a 2 CD set. Wondering if they haven’t released the second part yet.

I get your feeling as I have the same, for a perfectly understable reason: like the movie itself, it is only the first half of the journey.
Thx!
Thanks!!
Oh… I hope it’s decent. Thanks!
Thanks for all the options! That’s triple the effort!
Thank you so very much for sharing.

“Latest and last work…”
I’m pretty sure, health permitting, he’ll score Spielberg’s next film (after West Side Story), which is an autobiography (casting is commencing now).

Gracias por compartirla.
Not bad but a bit too salubrious for me, not gritty, too perfect, the metronome worked hard here.

“Herbert” is “Grains Of Sand”
