A new cut of the film presented at CANNES in 2023 with a new composer (Bruno NICOLAI was the original composer). I don’t know what this new version is worth, praised by Malcolm McDOWELL, who felt betrayed when the film was released in 1979 (there was also Helen MIRREN, Peter O’TOOLE, Sir John GIELGUD. Hard to believe that all these stars could have been “fooled”…
Laurent: Not hard to believe at all. The hardcore scenes were filmed and inserted (no pun intended, but there it is) later. Gielgud was especially outraged when he learned that he had essentially just starred in a porn film. You’ll note that most of the sex scenes feature the, um, “talents” of a certain pair of young ladies. These were two Italian girls whom producer (and Penthouse magazine publisher) Bob Guccione had met when he arrived in Italy, and whom he immediately moved into his rented villa for the duration of his stay. He was so enamored of them that he gave them parts in the film. Regarding this new cut, this is the first I’ve heard of it. Does it eliminate the pornographic scenes? If so, it is not the first time that was done: there was an R-rated version shown theaters in the early 1980s.
Probably he was joking, but Malcolm McDowell relates a story in the documentary ‘O Lucky Malcolm’ that he bumped into Gielgud, who said he thought the film ‘marvellous’ and had seen it three times.
@Gary Seven – The Ultimate Cut is an entirely new, 3-hour edit of CALIGULA, that uses not one single shot from the original film. The entire new edit, uses outtakes, alternate takes, alternate scenes, and other material that has never been seen before, to make a new version of the film, that removes the hardcore porn material, and tries to craft a serious, dramatic, historical epic for adults, without the seediness of the original version released in 1979 that run to around 156-minutes, and to craft it in the vein of the original, intended script by Gore Vidal.

The madness of an emperor, the decadence of an empire, brought to their climax! A one-of-a-kind peplum.

Actress Helen Mirren later described the film as “an irresistible blend of art and genitals.”

Bruno Nicolai brushed over? For shame.
Haven’t seen this piece of revisionism yet …
