FYI, this set differs from the Eternal Edition Premium Collection in that it is made up of BGM albums (BackGround Music – the actual tracks heard in the film/show). The Premium Collection contains what are known in Japan as “symphonic suites” or “symphonic albums” – music rearranged and re-orchestrated to provide a better listening experience, similar to the “concert suites” included on some of the soundtrack albums by the City of Prague Philharmonic. Both are excellent ways to enjoy Hiroshi Miyagawa’s magnificent music, and I think that any soundtrack music fan would enjoy these sets even if they are unfamiliar with Space Battleship Yamato. The one symphonic album in this set is File 00: Symphonic Suite Great Yamato, which is made up of preliminary tracks for a never-produced Yamato reboot. Re: the quality – these tracks are not VBR in the ususal sense. The tracks are CBR mp3s but the bitrate varies over the set as a whole. The good news is that even the lower bitrate albums sound quite good, probably due to the fact that most of these tracks are mono. These are the best (and only) versions I could find, and I would love to see them replaced by a higher-quality version, if possible.
Also, if anyone has the two-disc soundtrack to the recent Space Battleship Yamato 2205, please post!
FYI, I see now that my initial assessment was incorrect – most of these tracks are actually stereo. I had thought they would be mono since the films themselves had mono sound, but apparently the music for most of them was recorded in stereo, then mixed down to mono for the films/shows. Japanese theaters lagged behind American ones when it came to audio, with mono sound being the standard at the time these films were released (the last one, Final Yamato, came out in 1983), and of course TV was in mono at the time as well, as it was everywhere.
Some info on Space Battleship Yamato, for those who are interested: Yamato started as a TV series, then branched into films. The series was the co-creation of producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki and manga-ka Reiji Matsumoto (Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999), who re-wrote Nishizaki’s original story and designed the characters, ships, and other visual elements. With the exception of Yamato III, the series was directed by Toshio Masuda, co-director of “Tora! Tora! Tora!”
Space Battleship Yamato: TV season 1, 1974. There was also a theatrical film compiled from scenes from the series in 1977 (same music), in advance of Arrivederci Yamato.
Arrivederci Yamato: Theatrical film, 1978 (aka “Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato”).
Space Battleship Yamato 2: TV season 2, 1978.
Yamato: The New Voyage: TV movie, 1979.
Be Forever Yamato: Theatrical film, 1980.
Space Battleship Yamato III: TV season 3, 1980. They switched to roman numeral numbering for this one.
Final Yamato: Theatrical film, 1983. Originally set to come out in 1982, but was not finished in time. The “Prelude to Final Yamato” symphonic album of preliminary tracks (CD 7 of the Eternal Edition Premium Collection) was released in 1982 as a consolation prize to disappointed fans due to the delay. At the time of its release, Final Yamato was the longest animated film ever produced, a record it would hold for 36 years.
Re: Great Yamato – I was incorrect above, five episodes of this show were produced under the supervision of Matsumoto as an OVA (direct-to-video), but it was never finished due to a copyright dispute between Matsumoto and Nishizaki.

Have to put in my 2 cents as there’s no mention here of the US version of the anime show (Starblazers/Star Blazers-which ever is correct). The series going back to the TV antenna days “rabbit ears”-this was 1 of my start to my movie music listening (then of course John Williams/Star Wars-that did it, as well as the Trek movies). I was only in my late teens on watching the show (along w/ UFO & Space:1999 (love these tracks as well) daily line up-1st homework). What times……Can’t believe that this series is still on going. Just seen that another series-Rebels 3199 is about to hit the scene very soon. No doubt great tracks ahead on this……
Robbie: I discovered SBY through Star Blazers as well, in 1979 when I was a freshman in high school. Thankfully, unlike some anime that were imported in the 60s and 70s, they kept the fantastic music intact, except for replacing Japanese vocals with English and not using Scarlet Scarf, the end title song. Re: SBY: Rebels 3199 – that is going to be a re-telling of the film Be Forever Yamato, in the form of a 26-episode series. The following shows how the reboots equate to the original series:
